Main objective: EscarpArte is a project that aims to make available to the public the largest concentration of schematic painting of recent prehistory in Portugal, a unique cultural heritage with potential for tourism relevance in the regional and national context. Achieving this goal implies, on the one hand, working with the public, implementing training actions aimed at young and old (including the local community); on the other hand, organizing the narrative in innovative solutions that lead the public to know, feel and protect this heritage. The development of an innovative solution of interpretation and digital preservation of archaeological heritage results from the crossing of knowledge through the elaboration of archaeological works and 3D modeling, the production of adequate narratives, and the preparation of sites to be visited, creating a visitation route that captivates the visitor/ tourist to want to know an unrepeatable archaeological reality, in an equally exceptional geological and landscape context.

  • 3. Raise awareness of the fundamental importance of this heritage and its preservation
  • 4. Demonstrate that cultural and natural resources are important factors for territorial development of the interior and incentives to create economic dynamics
  • 5. Working solutions for governance and planning of actions to safeguard the archaeological heritage in potential risk situations
  • A1 – Project Management and Monitoring
  • A2 – Scientific coordination of archaeological works
  • A3 – Mapping
  • A4 – Digital 3D and multispectral survey
  • A5 – Works of Archaeology by Means of Excavation
  • A6 – Conservation and Archaeological Valorization
  • A7 – Processing, Study, Materials and Information Analysis
  • A8 – Implementation of the Visitation Route
  • A9 – Mitigation Plan Design
  • A10 – Patrimonial Education Plan
  • A11 – Digitalization of experience
  • A12 – Communication and Publication of Results
  • Mapping (including georeferencing of shelters and paintings);
  • Multispectral prospecting to study, safeguard and preserve the neolithic artistic corpus of the intervention area;
  • Integration of data into a three-dimensional digital model;
  • Production of non-existent knowledge about the artistic sets of prehistory through digital facsimiles that allow to recover information at infra-millimetric scales, in bands of radiation beyond the visible light spectrum, or even measure other physical parameters (e.g.: color, temperature, etc.) and determine the chemical composition of materials;
  • Update and deepen the excavation work (started in the 80s) in line with the Portuguese legislation on conservation of archaeological heritage;
  • Create signposted visitor routes with accessible information;
  • Create digital content for virtual and “in loco” visitation;
  • Develop a Training Plan aimed at three groups: the school community (educational program), the local community (conservation awareness actions) and the community of higher education students of courses related to tourism and heritage, in particular, those of the Higher School of Administration, Communication and Tourism of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (seminars and visits).
