Identification & Background

Project name: New sustainable substrates for the horticultural sector and development of biocidal natural extracts for agricultural pests and diseases

Acronym:
SUBSUS

Project description: The SUBSUS project aims to study and develop; a peat-free substrate for the cultivation of ornamental plants, from agroindustrial and forest residues, ensuring the circularity of the entire production process; and plant extracts and/or formulations, produced from biomass resulting from the production of ornamental plants, with bioactive chemical composition suitable for pest and fungus control in horticulture.

  • Specification of the substrates to be developed and the biopesticides to be developed, taking into account specific case studies in both plant species to demonstrate the substrate solution, as well as the pests and diseases that are intended to combat with the natural solution.
  • Survey and characterization of at least 10 regional raw materials available for potential use in substrate formulation
  • Formulate and characterize 1 substrate, without addition of peat, for use in the horticultural sector and that maintain the performance of rooting and growing plants
  • Demonstrate the viability of the production and use of substrates developed at a relevant scale for the sector, with application in rooting and fattening processes of ornamental plants
  • Development of an extraction process based on green, sustainable, easily scalable and economically viable technologies
  • Based on the chemical, bioactive and stability characterization of the extracts obtained, develop 3 extracts and/or formulations based on mixtures of extracts with fungal/fungicidal and insecticide/repellent activity. Study of the efficacy of extracts in the control of oidium and mildew fungi and mites, thrips and aphids
  • Scheduling for pilot production of selected bioactive extracts
  • Demonstration at an industrially relevant scale of the production and application of substrate and extracts.
  • Technical specifications for substrate development
  • Study of substrate formulation, characterization and impact on plant growth
  • Technical specifications for the development of extracts
  • Study of the processes of extraction of plant matrices, characterization of extracts and application tests
  • Demonstration of the potential of developed products
  • Dissemination, communication and exploitation of project results
  • Management of the project.
  • A new organic substrate without use of peat, and that maintains the agronomic performance of rooting Gardenias (Gardenia jasminoides), Grevilias (Grevillea spp.), Diosma (Diosma spp.), Ceanothus thyrsiflorus “Repens” and Fotinias (Photinia spp.) in 6-9 months and growth in pots of 10 liters in 12-18 months.
  • 3 extracts and/or formulations of mixtures of bioactive extracts, with the ability to eliminate/ control the spread of pests and fungal infestations in Garderias (tripes and lice), Grevilias (Plasmopara vitícola (míldio)), Diosma (ácaros, tripes, piolho), Cianothus (P. vitícola, ácaros) and Photinias (Oidium tuckery, louse).
