Identification & Background

Acronym: SIAMESE
Project code | NORTE2030-FEDER-01465500

Project description |The SIAMESE project aims to develop innovative solutions for a more sustainable almond orchard, addressing the need to “produce more with less.” To this end, biotechnological tools such as in vitro culture, molecular characterization, micrografting, and mycorrhization will be applied to improve Traditional Portuguese Varieties. These varieties are characterized by almonds with high organoleptic quality, appreciated and internationally recognized, but whose availability in the markets is currently nonexistent.

The project’s results will enable the production of high-quality plants with varietal and phytosanitary certification, capable of ensuring productive and economic performance equivalent to that of commercial varieties. A bio-stimulant product specifically designed for Portuguese almond orchards will also be developed, based on beneficial microorganisms from the root system and rhizosphere, contributing to greater efficiency of production factors, reduced environmental footprint, and improved agronomic performance of the plants.

  • Development and improvement of traditional Portuguese almond tree varieties through micropropagation, mycorrhization, and micrografting using in vitro culture techniques, based on mother plants selected in the field for high organoleptic fruit quality;
  • Development of biostimulant products based on mycorrhizal and endophytic microorganisms naturally present in almond orchard soils and almond trees;
  • Promotion of the circular economy, soil sustainability, and orchard productivity, as well as the organoleptic quality of almonds;
  • Enhancement of the value of traditional Portuguese varieties in national and international markets;
  • Support for the development and consolidation of the almond production value chain.
  • A1 – Selection and agronomic and genetic characterization of almond tree varieties;
  • A2 – In vitro establishment of elite material, acclimatization, and micrografting;
  • A3 – Production of beneficial microorganisms (biostimulants) for almond orchards;
  • A4 – Development of almond trees with new traits of interest;
  • A5 – Demonstration of the innovative potential of the developed products;
  • A6 – Promotion and broad dissemination of the project results;
  • A7 – Technical project management.
  • Production of almond trees with differentiated quality, supported by varietal and phytosanitary certification resulting from the application of molecular biology and plant biotechnology methodologies;
  • Development of an efficient protocol for micropropagation, micrografting, and mycorrhization of traditional Portuguese almond varieties (TPVs);
  • Development of a biostimulant product for almond orchards;
  • Production of almond trees with new traits of interest.
