Identification & Background

Project title: ForestWaterUp – Nature-based solutions for the ecological restoration of degraded soils in Lagos do Sabor

Project code: POCI-07-62G4-FEDER-181557

Main objective: The ForestWaterUp project proposes to carry out ecological restoration interventions on the slopes that border the Lagos do Sabor, inserted in the Site of Community Importance of the Natura 2000 Network “Rios Sabor e Maçãs”, focusing on the recovery of soils degraded by the great fire of Picões, which affected almost 15 thousand hectares in 2013.
The activities to be developed consist in applying a series of Nature-based Solutions (SbNs), with good cost-efficiency and low application impact, in order to reduce soil erosion losses and increase C fixation in the soil. These soil protection actions will serve as potentiators of the success of the afforestation of the margins that minimize the direct entry of sediments into the reservoir and thus contribute to the protection and improvement of the ecological quality of the water body. With an innovative character, it is proposed to start from the Baixo Sabor’s own reservoir, in particular islands, to enhance the natural succession on the slopes.

  • Carry out ecological restoration interventions on the slopes that border the Lagos do Sabor;
  • Develop the SbNs or soil conditioners (compost and biochar) from olive pomace, an agro-industrial by-product associated with environmental problems in the region;
  • Optimize the application of SbN based on an algorithm based on a sediment transport model on the slope;
  • Reforestation of the bank of the slopes of the Sabor River, in the municipality of Mogadouro, with native Mediterranean species;
  • Installation of floating islands with the function of propagation of species anchored there and as a seed bank, in order to favor natural ecological succession;
  • Monitoring of ecosystem services, fed by protocols for monitoring erosive processes (field, laboratory and remote detection), soil properties and water quality in the reservoir.
  • Detailed survey of the site and patterns of location of interventions.
  • Installation of instrumentation and field equipment.
  • Formulation of Nature-based Solutions (SbN) based on by-products from the region’s agri-food industry: compound and biochar enriched with phosphate.
  • Application of SbN in pilot areas.
  • Ecological restoration of the banks: installation of floating islands and monitoring of water column quality and plant health.
  • Ecological restoration of the banks: reforestation with riparian vegetation.
  • Follow-up and monitoring of soil interventions.
  • Evaluation of water turbidity and eutrophication with remote detection.
  • Evaluation of implemented measures: indicators of desertification, biodiversity and water quality.
  • Dissemination of the project.
  • Technical, financial and administrative management of the project.
  • Reduction of erosion on the slopes and consequent loss of soil;
  • Reforestation of the banks of the Lagos do Sabor;
  • Enhancement of post-fire recovery and natural succession;
  • Improvement of water quality and promotion of sustainable energy production from the reservoir by reducing sediment runoff;
  • Contribution of measures to combat desertification.
