Objectives

1) Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions;

2) Reuse wastewater for sustainable food production;

3) Implement regenerative agriculture and aquaculture practices;

4) Repurpose waste streams and utilize renewable energy;

5) Achieve a net-positive freshwater balance.

Activities

Tasks of WP 7 (WE*F*E Nexus (Food)) – Leader MORECOLAB

7.1. Organic permaculture farming;

7.2. Valorisation of reject brine in solar saltworks (“Brine2Salt”);

7.3. Set up of polyphenol extraction plant;

7.4. Valorisation of polyphenols;

7.5. CC for UAE of biophenols (CC4BPE);

7.6. Collection and transport of OMW (wet olive pomace and OMWW);

7.7. Shrimp – Seaweed IMTA;

7.8. Donation and distribution management of surplus food.

Expected results

Water
Generation of reclaimed water for irrigation through desalination of brackish water and treatment of olive mill waste.

Energy

Generation of renewable energy through agri-photovoltaics and anaerobic digestion technologies.

Food
Production of certified organic crops, table and Epsom salt, polyphenols, shrimps and seaweed.

Environment
Monitoring of pollutants and land preservation.

Scalability
Development of long-term business models, policy recommendations, and frameworks for replication and scaling across regions.
